2010 Primetime Emmy Awards Winners

  • First of, I'm very happy for the Modern Family win for Outstanding Comedy plus Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Eric Stonestreet! I really thought Glee will win especially that the opening number was all about Glee. Anyway, Jane Lynch won and Ryan Murphy for Outstanding Directing for the pilot of Glee, so it's not a total shut out anyway.
  • Jim Parsons won for his iconic role as Sheldon! I never thought it was possible but I'm so over the moon for his win! Bazinga!
  • Woah, Kyra Sedgwick did really pull an upset against expected winner Juliana Margulies!Well The Good Wife didn't come home empty handed with the surprising win by Archie Panjabi for Outstanding Supporting Actress!
  • Bryan Cranston won for the third straight year. Poor Hugh Laurie, this was his best shot for the win. Sad.
  • I'm sure Mad Men deserves the win but Matthew Weiner is just so condescending when he was accepting his awards.
  • The Pacific won Outstanding Mini Series, it was up against one nominee only Return to Cranford so it was an obvious win. But they lost writing and directing nods though to TV movies.
  • Jimmy Fallon is hilarious in this tribute to 24, Law& Order and Lost. Love the Green Day impersonation
  • The Amazing Race lost for the first time! But at least Top Chef won not American Idol! But Survivor should have been nominated
  • The Colbert Report lost again to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. The human centipede reference on the show was a winner for me.

Spotlight: The Social Network

When I first heard that there will be movie about Facebook I thought it was a joke but to my surprise the people behind the film are actually credible and serious filmmakers. The Social Network is the story on how Facebook was created, it is written by Aaron Sorkin ("The West Wing," "A Few Good Men"), directed by David Fincher ("Curious Case of Benjamin Button") and produced by Scott Rudin ("No Country for Old Men," "There Will Be Blood," "Doubt," "Julie and Julia"). There is already a review of this film and the critic says the film is so good that it could be the frontrunner for next year's Oscar awards. I for one will be watching this film once it hit the local theaters (and I believe it will given how popular Facebook is here in the Philippines, I'm sure a lot will be curious about the film). It will be shown in the US in October (and hopefully not long after for the Philippines)

Emmy 2010 Predix Part 3

Align Center
The final part of my 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards Predictions. The first part discussed my predictions for the Supporting Acting categories and the second part for the Lead Acting Categories. For the final part of my special blog series, I will discuss who I think will Outstanding Drama Series and Comedy series. For the judging of the winners, each show picked six episodes from the eligible season which they think are the best. The six episodes will be divided to three sets with two episodes each which will be sent to the voters for judging. A voter would only judge the show with two episodes only (of course, there's a possibility that some voters follows a certain show already and watched all episodes of it). Anyway, here are my predictions:

Outstanding Drama Series

* Breaking Bad (AMC)
* Dexter (Showtime)
* The Good Wife (CBS)
* Lost (ABC)
* Mad Men (AMC)
* True Blood (HBO)

Which Show Will Win: Mad Men (AMC)

The current champion is still well loved by the industry like in the past two years. Winning for the third straight year is not a lock but the chances are high, it submitted its strongest episodes last season and this show is not as polarizing as compared to the other nominees.

Close Second: Lost (ABC)
The final season of Lost is the most talked about and debated show last season especially it's series finale. Many find the final season's arc not good overall compared to the previous seasons but the sixth season had a lot of standout episodes and those episodes were the ones submitted for competition. Plus, it could also be an opportunity to reward the show for breaking grounds in US network television and it's an irresistible opportunity to bookend the show with an Emmy win (they won on their first season)

Possible Upset: Breaking Bad (AMC)
-If the show had a more nominations (10+) and if had a Writing nomination I would have pick this show as the close second for the win because the show's third season was very well received by the critics but with only 7 nominations and lack of Writing nod it will really be hard for the show to manage a win. But it did got a nod for Directing plus the amazing performances of Cranston and Paul also helped to raise the show's profile so with a strong set of episodes submitted there's an outside chance that this show could pull an upset win.

Which Show I Want to Win: Lost (ABC)
It's one remarkable show that will be remembered for years, whether you like the conclusion or not, we simply cannot deny how ambitious this project and how it managed to intrigue the viewers and go crazy discussing the show. It also did great with how it handled its characters. It will be a great send off for the show if managed to win for one final chance.

Outstanding Comedy Series

* 30 Rock (NBC)
* Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
* Glee (FOX)
* Modern Family (ABC)
* Nurse Jackie (Showtime)
* The Office (NBC)

Which Show Will Win: Glee (Fox)

Glee received 19 nominations, the most nominated new show and also in the comedy field. It has the buzz, it's the most talked about show last season. It maybe receiving backlash right now due to its intensive hype but no one can't deny the pop cultural impact of this show. It won the Golden Globes, SAG and TCAs. An Emmy will be make it full circle.

Close Second: Modern Family (ABC)
- Next to Glee, it received the second most number of nominations for a new show. The show is praised for revitalizing the family sitcom genre. it won awards in the Writers' Guild and Directors' Guild awards. This will be a close match between Glee and Modern Family.

Possible Upset: 30 Rock (NBC)
Like Alec Baldwin, despite being the current title holder (3 for 3 at that!) no one is expecting 30 Rock to win for a fourth consecutive year due to the strong showing of freshman shows Glee and Modern Family and with a season that was not well received over all. But still 30 Rock chose the right episodes to submit to the voters that could possibly sneak them a win and if let's say the voters are divided between Glee and Modern Family, 30 Rock could still come out as the victor (but I hope not, I like 30 Rock but it's time to give the award to another show)

Which Show Do I Want to Win: Modern Family (ABC)
The show is well written with a great ensemble to give justice to the writing. It gave a new spin to the family sitcom which many people thought is already a tired concept. And I really enjoy watching this sitcom.

Midweek Musings 5

*I'm been on sick leave at work for the past three days because I got acute tonsillitis, flu and asthma. It started last Sunday and I really had a difficult time. It's my first "major" sickness in years. "Major" as in I need to have a check up with the doctor. Although my parents paid for the bill and the medicines, I told them I will pay them come payday because I have to be responsible already and after all I got sick because of my unhealthy eating habits(acute tonsillitis was caused by my excessive eating of sweets and even though I already feel a little off last Saturday I still ate junk foods). It's really expensive to get sick these days so this is a big lesson for me. I need to watch my diet, I'm already near being obese actually and with a family history of hypertension and high blood pressure I should be really cautious.

*As an effect of my sickness, my 2 year old nephew and my mother also got sick. I really feel guilty about this because it's somehow my fault. Nanay is a lot better now thank God but my nephew is not as active as he used to be although the doctor says that we should not worry at all as he has no major illness that he just had minor coughs and slight fever and in one to two days he will recover. But still it really makes me sad to see him not running and playing around and I could see in his eyes he is not feeling good. I definitely understand now why my parents were so protective of me when I was a child because I had several severe asthma attacks as early 2 months old and up until I was around 5 years old. I can imagine how worried they were everytime I was hospitalized. I had times when I talked back to my parents when ever they scold or make sermon at me which now in hindsight makes me feel guilty. Good thing I never had strained relationships with Nanay and Tatay. I love them and I don't regret anymore if there some things in my life before that I sacrificed because I know it will not be good for my parents. It's all worth it.

*Miss Universe 2010 was held yesterday and beforehand I've already heard that Miss Philippines Venus Raj had a shot on winning. I thought it was just media hype like in the past years but well she actually did well yesterday making it to the top 5, the lone Asian in the top 15 actually, and bagging 4th runner up. She could have won if she had a more impressive answer on the Q&A portion but well making it to the finals is already a major, major accomplishment. I know some people may find it shallow since it was just a beauty contest but at least it was somewhat a bright spot for the Filipinos who were disturbed by the hostage taking tragedy last Monday. Yes, it did not solve any problems or anything but it was a good "break" so to speak. Congratulations Venus Raj!

*I'm still not over the hostage taking tragedy last Monday. Everything that happened last Monday still haunts me. And I know that Hongkong nationals are even more upset with this tragedy and sadly it is now straining the relationships of Filipinos and the Hongkong nationals as it has been reported that several Filipino domestic helpers will be fired or already fired by their employers because of the backlash caused by the tragedy. I know that emotions are high right now but I hope that their government will help ask the people to not extend their anger to the domestic helpers and all the Filipinos in Hongkong right now because it's really unfair. I like what Jackie Chan tweeted earlier today because despite his shock and sorrow when he found out about the tragedy he is still rational about it and big thanks for him not promoting a culture of hate. Coming from an influential person like him, it was really touching.

My Thoughts on the Manila Hostage Taking Tragedy

The hostage taking of a dismissed policeman of a tourist bus with Hongkong nationals on board came to a tragic end that will forever be remembered by the country. I thought it wouldn't turn bad because it seemed like the hostage taker will not harm the tourists and just wants to air his grievance but what happened later that night was truly tragic. Much has been said about the mishandling of the authorities and the media aggravating the situation. But the bottomline is eight innocent tourists who just went to have a vacation here in the Philippines were killed and the survivors will be forever be traumatized with the incident. It was truly disappointing how the hostage taking incident was handled. The safety of the hostages should be the top priority above anything else. It's obvious that the drama over the arrest of the brother of the hostage taker aggravated the situation and here is my take on the issue: Media is partly to blame because they should have not covered the incident live knowing that the hostage has access to TV and once he sees his brother being taken by the police that would have surely provoked his anger, I understand that it's different when you are in that moment and that the police did not issue a news blackout or something but it should be the discretion already of the news people, yes I understand they just want to inform the viewers but we, the viewers, we will understand if we will be on the dark with the hostage drama crisis as long as no one will get hurt and especially die. As for the police, I understand that the brother of the hostage was not helping matters by telling his brother not to accept the negotiator's offer but since he was already creating drama and drawing so much attention from the media, you should have not taken that guy because you know he will resist and it will just create commotion that will not reap any good results at all. The priority should have been the safety of the hostages. The ideal scenario is that after the hostages are released safely then they could go back to the brother and charge with obstruction of justice. I really don't want to be one of those people who just loves to blame people whenever bad things happen but in this situation I just really can't keep my thoughts to myself especially after seeing the victims. It was the last day of their trip here in the Philippines and they have to suffer this ordeal! I know it was not an easy job for both the media and police and that they also risked their lives but there were lapses and in that kind of crisis, we can't afford any lapses because one wrong move could cause lives. I just can't help but think that it could have been avoided.

Michelle Branch, Where Are You?

I really miss Michelle Branch, it was love at first her when I heard "Everywhere" then she followed it up with more good singles like All You Wanted, Goodbye to You and Breathe. I'll always remember my high school years with her The Spirit Room / Hotel Paper songs. But she got married and laid low for awhile. She returned for awhile as part of the country duo The Wreckers which also had good songs. But after one album, she disappeared in the limelight again.

But wait Michelle Branch is back!

Well sort of...

Last year she already had two songs "This Way" and "Sooner or Later" in the airwaves but due to lack of promotion those songs never took off. And while it was announced about two years ago that she would release her new album soon but it never happened! As a fan it was really frustrating to see her have problems with her record label (she would sometimes express her frustrations on her twitter account) but finally this year it will be released but the supposed album became just an EP and you could only order it through her website www.michellebranch.com but last week though the album could now be pre-ordered on iTunes and will have a limited Physical CD release too. The EP has six tracks only:
  1. "Ready to Let You Go"
  2. "Sooner or Later"
  3. "I Want Tears"
  4. "Crazy Ride"
  5. "Summertime"
  6. "Everything Comes and Goes"
You could listen to the songs on her website. Among the six tracks, my favorites are Sooner or Later and Everything Comes and Goes. The EP as a whole is really a mix of country and her old pop-rock sound although the country influence is more prevalent. It's no surprise that Everything Comes and Goes is only an EP now instead of a full length album because later this year or early 2011 she will release a full-pledge country album "A Different Kind of Country". I did like her material as a member of the country duo "The Wreckers" but I just miss her sound "Hotel Paper" days but nevertheless. I would still support Michelle Branch and I hope she visits again in the Philippines.

Bring Back The "O" in OPM

One criticism about OPM lately is that they are not following the "O" in OPM which means "Original" (as in Original Pilipino Music) because of the onslaught of revivals and tagalized versions of foreign songs. I feel the same way too and it's really frustrating to hear the lack of original material on mainstream OPM these days. I know those revivals sell well but I hope that we could hear more original OPM songs in the airwaves soon. I strongly believe that if the song is good, it would be a hit! I hope the revival fad will die soon. I don't mind revivals but there's always a limit to everything and original material should be more present in the airwaves than remakes. Anyway, in line with that let me share to you my five current favorite OPM songs which are also gaining good airplay in Mega Manila. :)

2010 Creative Arts Emmys Winners

Here is the list of winners of the Creative Arts Emmys which were awarded a few minutes. Some quick comments on the winners:

* I'm glad Neil Patrick Harris finally won an Emmy and not just one but two. First was for his guest stint with Glee and the other was a group award for all people behind Tony Awards which won outstanding special class program, NPH was the host. He is up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy as always for How I Met Your Mother, I think he will lose again given the strong presence of Glee and Modern Family

*I'm happy Modern Family won for Outstanding Casting, the casting director truly deserved as he was able to assemble a great cast with no weak link

*Jeff Probst won again for Outstanding Reality Show host, third year in a row, and the only one who have won it. Looks like he will be "The Amazing Race" of this category

*I was surprised The Simpsons lost Animated Program to Disney Prep and Landing special. They submitted the 20th Anniversary episode, I thought it was a lock for the win

*Wow, Anne Hathaway won an Emmy! She won for her voice-over work for The Simpsons

*Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie won Oustanding Children's Program. My prediction was the series would win not the movie like last year but well it was another surprise win sort of.

*Canceled series FlashForward won an Emmy for Stunt Coordination, it's a deserving especially if you watched the Pilot episode which was submitted.

Emmy 2010 Predix Part 2

Last Wednesday, I shared my predictions/analysis for the Supporting Acting categories for both Comedy and Drama so this time around let's move on to the Lead Acting Categories. But before this, tomorrow (Saturday in the US) is the Creative Arts Emmy Awards Night where all the technical categories plus the guest acting categories will be awarded! There are hundreds to be awarded in the Primetime Emmy Awards so only the major ones will be broadcasted on the awards night on August 29 (August 30 in the morning here in the Philippines). Anyway, here are my predictions:

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

* Kyle Chandler for playing Eric Taylor on Friday Night Lights for episode "East of Dillon" (The 101 Network/NBC)
* Bryan Cranston for playing Walter White on Breaking Bad for episode "Full Measure" (AMC)
* Matthew Fox for playing Jack Shephard on Lost for episode "The End" (ABC)
* Michael C. Hall for playing Dexter Morgan on Dexter for episode "The Getaway" (Showtime)
* Jon Hamm for playing Don Draper on Mad Men for episode "The Gypsy and the Hobo" (AMC)
* Hugh Laurie for playing Dr. Gregory House on House for episode "Broken" (Fox)

Who Will Win: Hugh Laurie (House)

Laurie submitted the very powerful season 6 premiere of House which he really give a magnificent performance wherein the 2-hour episode focuses only on him, if was a great showcase of his thespic skills. If he loses again this year with that episode I don't think he will ever win at all!

Close Second: All 5 of them!
Yes, this is one tough category that I could see any of the five actors winning this award. Hall had a great season with Dexter and he won the Golden Globe and SAG this year. Newbies Chandler and Fox submitted strong episodes that could snatch them a win same goes to consistent nominee Hamm. And of course reigning champ Cranston delivered another magnificent performance. It really is anybody's ballgame.

Who I Want Win: Hugh Laurie (House)
It's obvious from my previous post that I want Hugh Laurie to win, he is way overdue for an award especially how iconic Dr. Gregory House has become because of him.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

* Connie Britton for playing Tami Taylor on Friday Night Lights for episode "After the Fall" (The 101 Network/NBC)
* Glenn Close for playing Patricia "Patty" Hewes on Damages for episode "Your Secrets Are Safe" (FX)
* Mariska Hargitay for playing Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for episode "Perverted" (NBC)
* January Jones for playing Betty Draper on Mad Men for episode "The Gypsy and the Hobo" (AMC)
* Julianna Margulies for playing Alicia Florrick on The Good Wife for episode "Threesome" (CBS)
* Kyra Sedgwick for playing Brenda Leigh Johnson on The Closer for episode "Maternal Instincts" (TNT)

Who Will Win: Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)

The most praised performance of any actress on a new show last season and she already won a lot of awards already, it would be a shocker if she loses the biggest award.

Close Second: Glenn Close (Damages)
She is the Glenn Close and has won the past two years and a three-peat is not out of the question.

Possible Upset: Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
Many already written her off because despite being nominated consistently but she has never won at all. But she submitted a very strong that could really pull what could be the biggest upset on the awards night.

Who I Want to Win: Juliana Margulies (The Good Wife)
I'm impressed on her very effective dramatic, it's not showy performance but she could make you feel what her character's dilemma is with just a simple stare or subtle gesture.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

* Alec Baldwin for playing Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock for episode "Don Geiss, America, and Hope" (NBC)
* Steve Carell for playing Michael Scott on The Office for episode "The Cover Up" (NBC)
* Larry David for playing Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm for episode "Seinfeld" (HBO)
* Matthew Morrison for playing Will Schuester on Glee for episode "Mash Up" (FOX)
* Jim Parsons for playing Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory for episode "The Pants Alternative" (CBS)
* Tony Shalhoub for playing Adrian Monk on Monk for episode "Monk and the End" (USA)

Who Will Win: Tony Shalhoub (Monk)

The three-time winner could score a fourth and final Emmy for his grounbreaking role as the obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk especially that he submitted the two-hour series finale which he delivered a very heartfelt performance although not necessary comedic but he has won three times already, a fourth win is highly possible!

Close Second: Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Parsons is still the most buzzed nominee here like last year, he submitted a strong episode (although in my opinion not as strong as last year's submission) where he showcase how great an actor he is and how he carried the show from a cult favorite to a ratings juggernaut but what's keeping me from predicting him to win is that if he already lost last year with a stronger episode
he could still lose now.

Possible Upset: Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
He won the past two years I know but I'm placing him as a possible upset because no one is expecting him to win again given how weak the storyline his character had for the previous season and the episode he submitted is not that remarkable but he is still the Alec Baldwin and the voters love him so don't count a three-peat for him (but I hope not!)

Who I Want to Win: Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
He deserves it so much, the way he can deliver those long dialogues with scientific jargons with ease, with and charm deserved a recognition. He transformed Sheldon to become one of the contemporary sitcom icons!

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

* Toni Collette for playing Tara Gregson on United States of Tara for episode "Tornado" (Showtime)
* Edie Falco for playing Jackie Peyton on Nurse Jackie for episode "Pilot" (Showtime)
* Tina Fey for playing Liz Lemon on 30 Rock for episode "Dealbreakers Talk Show #0001" (NBC)
* Julia Louis-Dreyfus for playing Christine Campbell on The New Adventures of Old Christine for episode "I Love What You Do for Me" (CBS)
* Lea Michele for playing Rachel Berry on Glee for episode "Sectionals" (FOX)
* Amy Poehler for playing Leslie Knope on Parks And Recreation for episode "Telethon" (NBC)

Who Will Win: Toni Collette (United States of Tara)

Last year's winner could win again this year as she submitted an episode where she has one excellent scene where Collette showcased how excellent an actress she is as she effortlessly transformed from one personality to another, that scene alone could warrant her another win. The show and her character is not really comedic though but she won last year with that material, I could see her winning it again

Close Second: Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
Like Tara, the show and her character is not really comedic but the academy loves Falco so much that they nominated her show on many categories including Outstanding Comedy which no one expected actually. She submitted the pilot episode where she showcased how commanding her presence is on screen but she does not have one standout scene like Collete had so that's why I did not pick her as my bet for the win but her reputation alone could give her votes to win.

Possible Upset: Lea Michelle (Glee)
She is the central character of the most talked about show last season which garnered 19 nominations on this year's Emmy awards. She could benefit from the halo effect of the Glee love from the voters this year. Her submitted episode does not have a standout comedic scene but she has one captivating musical number where she performed Don't Rain on My Parade" where it could charm the voters to vote for her.

Who I Want to Win: Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)
Her performance from the vastly improved second season of this show is very witty and charming. Her submitted episode showcased how excellent Poehler's comedic timing is. And maybe her win could make the viewers check out the show. The show had a weak first season but it really improved on the second season so I wish people would give this show another shot. And I believe a Poehler win could help the show.
