Hot 100 #1? Anybody's Ballgame!

Update: Paul Grein of Yahoo! Chart Watch updated his post this week and added this:

""Like A G6" tops the 2 million mark in paid downloads. It also regains the top spot on the Hot 100, displacing "What's My Name?," which drops from #1 to #7. "Only Girl (In The World)" (which jumps to a new high of #2 on the Hot 100) holds at #1 in the U.K for the second week"

This week's race for the Hot 100 #1 is a close fight between Rihanna's "Only Girl (In The World)", Far East Movement's "Like a G6", P!nk's "Raise Your Glass" and even "Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars has an outside chance of reclaiming the #1 spot. The thing is the top sellers this week which are Glee's "Teenage Dream", Ke$ha's "We R Who We R", Black Eyed Peas' "The Time", Katy Perry's "Firework" and last week's #1 Rihanna's "What's My Name" lack enough airplay points to top the Hot 100 this week. The airplay leader "Just The Way You Are" has a strong lead on that area but the sales are already declining (it dropped out of the Digital Songs top 10 this week). Next in line on the airplay race are "Only Girl" and "Like A G6" with the former ahead slightly on the latter. But "Like A G6" has a lead on the sales over "Only Girl" this week making it another too close to call race.

The real darkhorse is Pink's "Raise Your Glass" which sold a lot more than "Like a G6", "Only Girl" and "Just The Way You Are"and with high airplay too although it's airplay still lags behind the aforementioned three songs. So the bottomline is this really one exciting week for the Hot 100 as this is probably the closest race to #1 this year! The streaming points which accounts for ~5-10% of the Hot 100 chart pointing system might be the deciding factor for this. Can't wait to find out the results tomorrow!

On the Billboard Hot Digital Songs Chart, Glee scores their first ever #1 with their cover of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" which sold 214K this week. This topples the record of Glee's cover of "Don't Stop Believin" which sold 177K, the previous record holder for the biggest opening week for a Glee track but it debuted at #2 though behind "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black Eyed Peas. "Don't Stop Believin" so far is the only Glee track to sell 1 million, let's wait and see if their cover of "Teenage Dream" could match that. Meanwhile Black Eyed Peas' new single "The Time (Dirty Bit) from their upcoming album "The Beginning" sold a healthy 170K on its debut week and entering the digital songs chart at #3. However, this could be considered an underwhelming performance for BEP given the dominance of "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling" a year ago on the digital sales front but that's really tough act to follow.

Here is this week's top 10 on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs courtesy of Yahoo! Chart Watch
  1. Glee Cast - Teenage Dream (214K)
  2. Ke$ha - "We R Who We R" (191K)

  4. Katy Perry - "Firework" (161K)
  5. P!nk - "Raise Your Glass" (160K)

Susan Boyle does it again! After surprising everyone last year with the massive sales of her debut album "I Dreamed A Dream" which sold 701K on its first week, she sets another record this year as the first female artist to debut atop the Billboard with a Christmas album with "The Gift" and more importantly "The Gift" sold 318k making it the largest opening sales for a Christmas album of the Nielsen/Soundscan era of the Billboard 200. Some are saying that the 318 first week sales is a far cry from her massive opening sales week for her debut album but we should take note the Christmas/Holiday albums don't really sell that much on its first week but as we come closer to the holiday season the sales build up just like what happened to Josh Groban's "Noel" three years ago debuted at #8 but went on to top the Billboard 200 for five weeks selling ~500k a week! "The Gift" is estimated to sell another 300k next week which is really impressive given that it's ordinary for albums to drop hard on its second week after a huge debut. I'm projecting "The Gift" will sell around 1.5 - 2 million by the end of the year. Here's the top 20 Best Selling Albums on this week's Billboard 200 courtesy of Pulse Music Board
