"Firework" Blasts Atop Hot 100

Three for Three for Katy Perry as "Firework", the third official single from her second album "Teenage Dream", ascends 2-1 on this week's Billboard Hot 100 as reported by Billboard. This is Perry's third consecutive #1 this year after "California Gurls" (6 weeks) and "Teenage Dream" (2 weeks). With "Firework" topping the Hot 100 it continues the fast turnover rate of #1 songs on the Hot 100 as this is the 6th consecutive different #1 song on the Hot 100. Last week's #1 "Raise Your Glass" drops to #2 and another former #1 Rihanna & Drake's "What's My Name"surges back at #3. On the heels of the release of their new album "The Beginning" (which had disappointing sales but more on that later), the Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)" climbs 9-4 followed by Bruno Mars' "Grenade" which explodes 10-5. Here are the rest of this week's Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and as always full chart and more chart comments tomorrow)
  1. Katy Perry - "Firework"
  2. P!nk - "Raise Your Glass"
  3. Rihanna feat Drake - "What's My Name?"
  4. Black Eyed Peas - "The Time (Dirty Bit)
  5. Bruno Mars - "Grenade"
  6. Rihanna - "Only Girl (In the World)"
  7. Bruno Mars - "Just the Way You Are"
  8. Ke$ha - "We R Who We R"
  9. Nelly - "Just a Dream"
  10. Trey Songz feat Nicki Minaj- "Bottoms Up"

"Firework" spends a second week atop the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart selling 212K this week while the Glee Cast once again earned the top debut with their cover of "Dog Days Are Over" entering the chart at #8 selling 98K. The original recording "Dog Days Are Over" by Grammy nominee for Best New Artist Florence + The Machine benefited on the Glee exposure as the songs climbs 40-11 selling 90k this week. Sorry no Hot Digital songs leak this week so I'll just share the Top 10 courtesy of Yahoo! Chart Watch:
  1. Katy Perry - "Firework" (212K)
  2. Black Eyed Peas - "The Time (Dirty Bit) (198K)
  3. Bruno Mars - "Grenade" (173K)
  4. P!nk - "Raise Your Glass" (147K)
  5. Rihanna feat Drake - "What's My Name?" (143K)
  6. Ke$ha - "We R Who We R" (134K)
  7. Cee Lo Green - "F*ck You (Forget You)" (110K)
  8. Glee Cast - "Dog Days Are Over" (98K)
  9. Bruno Mars - "Just the Way You Are" (97K)
  10. Trey Songz feat Nicki Minaj- "Bottoms Up" (93K)

On the Billboard 200 top albums chart, Susan Boyle "The Gift" returns atop the Billboard 200 selling 272K this week followed by Taylor Swift "Speak Now" at #2 selling 182K this week, just like last year Swift and Boyle continue to show their selling prowess and proves that their huge first week sales are no flukes. Last week's Top 2 albums fell six notches each this week as Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" fell 1-7 and Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday" plummets 2-8. Many expected that The Black Eyed Peas' new album "The Beginning" opening sales will be good given the massive success of their previous album "The E.N.D" unfortunately BEP's new album underwhelmed as it debuts at #6 selling 119K this week and it's not even the top debut this week which went to the 4th volume of the Glee Cast OST at #5. Many factors could be considered for the lower than expected first week sales for BEP, first they released "The E.N.D" on the height of Boom Boom Pow's reign atop the Hot 100 which undoubtedly boost the first week sales. While the lead single from their new album "The Time (Dirty Bit)" is by no means a flop (it climbs to 9-4 on the Hot 100 this week) it is clearly far behind the hit "Boom Boom Pow" was. But if BEP could produced another hit or string of hit singles for this album it will help keep the album's sales afloat over time although with the sluggish start it will have a hard time matching the success of the previous album.
