Grenade Explodes Atop Hot 100

Bruno Mars' scores his second solo #1 and third #1 overall on the Hot 100 as "Grenade" tops this week's Billboard Hot 100. "Grenade" sold a massive 559k downloads this week! In fact, the top 10 on this week's Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart all sold above 290k. This was made possible by the Christmas sales rush as many people receive new mp3 players and iTunes cards to so last week was indeed a huge sales week! Last week's #1 "Firework" by Katy Perry steps down to #2 but like 'Grenade" the single also enjoyed huge sales spike this week selling 508K. Here is this week's top 10 on the Hot Digital Songs Chart courtesy of Paul Grein's Yahoo! Chart Watch:

1. Bruno Mars' "Grenade" (559K)
2. Katy Perry's "Firework" (508K)
3. Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" (411K)
4. Rihanna featuring Drake, "What's My Name?" (343K)
5. Wiz Khalifa's "Black And Yellow" (331K)
6. P!nk's "Raise Your Glass" (324K)
7. Enrique Iglesias featuring Ludacris & DJ Frank E's "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" (312K)
8. Lil Wayne featuring Cory Gunz's "6 Foot 7 Foot" (308K)
9. The Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)" (294K)
10. Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj's "Bottoms Up" (291K).

The huge digital sales this week served a big impact on this week's Hot 100 as the Hot 100 top 10 is almost identical to the Hot Digital Songs top 10. The top 5 is composed of former #1 songs led by "Grenade" and "Firework" and followed by Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" at #3, Rihanna and Drake's "What's My Name" at #4 and Pink's "Raise Your Glass" at #5 while Enrique Iglesias scores another top 10 hit as his new single "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You) jumps to #7. Here is is this week's Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 (full chart to be posted tomorrow)

While the single sales are rosy the album sales on the other hand are gloomy as for the first time in Nielsen Soundscan history (which started in 1991) no album sold at least 300k during the Christmas week where sales are greater than usual. Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" continues its reign on top selling 276k (bringing its total sales to date to 2.8 million, it will likely cross the 3 million mark next week) followed by former champ Susan Boyle's "The Gift" at #2 selling 240K this week. This is sad to see albums fairing weekly on the holidays but what else is new sales are down 13% from last year. Expect record breaking low sales on January-February 2011 when sales usually take a big slump after the holidays. Unfortunately, there are no Billboard 200 album sales leak so far this week that I have seen so I'll just share the top 10 for the meantime (courtesy of Yahoo! Chart Watch):

1. Taylor Swift, "Speak Now", 276,000
2. Susan Boyle, "The Gift", 240,00
3. Various Artists, "Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album", 160,000
4. Jackie Evancho, "O Holy Night", 151,000
