My 68th Golden Globe Awards Predictions [Part 2]

Yesterday I shared my predictions for the TV categories and for the second and last part I'll share my predictions for the Film categories. Admittedly, my predictions are just based on buzz, trends and also threw in some wild guess picks so that this would not look a lot like the other predictions I read. With the nominated films, I've only seen "Inception", "The Social Network", "Toy Story 3" and "How To Train You Dragon". The 68th Golden Globe Awards will be handed out January 16 on CBS (January 17 in the Philippines and will be aired at Star World, 8am)

Best Picture - Drama
"Black Swan"
"The Fighter"
"Inception"
"The King's Speech"
"The Social Network"

Winner: "The Social Network"
Close Second: "The King's Speech"
Possible Upset: "Inception"

A lot of critic groups already "liked" "The Social Network" and heralded it as the Best Picture of 2010 and Golden Globes will likely follow suit. A "Inception" upset would make me happy though :D

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
"Alice in Wonderland"
"Burlesque"
"The Kids are Alright"
"Red"
"The Tourist"

Winner: "The Kids are Alright"
Possible Upset: "Alice in Wonderland"

The Kids Are Alright is the best reviewed by far among these set of nominees. "Alice In Wonderland" however has the 1 billion worldwide box office which could give it a small chance of pulling an upset

Best Actor - Drama
Jesse Eisenberg, "The Social Network"
Colin Firth, "The King's Speech"
James Franco, "127 Hours"
Ryan Gosling, "Blue Valentine"
Mark Wahlberg, "The Fighter"

Winner: Colin Firth, "The King's Speech"
Close Second: Jesse Eisenberg, "The Social Network"
Possible Upset: James Franco, "127 Hours"

Firth took almost all the awards from various Critic groups so this is his award to lose

Best Actress - Drama
Halle Berry, "Frankie and Alice"
Nicole Kidman, "The Rabbit Hole"
Jennifer Lawrence, "Winter's Bone"
Natalie Portman, "Black Swan"
Michelle Williams, "Blue Valentine"

Winner: Natalie Portman, "Black Swan"
Possible Upset: Nicole Kidman, "The Rabbit Hole"

Same with Firth. This is her award to lose (I love Natalie Portman! Glad to see her see her be recognized :)

Best Actor - Musical or Comedy
Johnny Depp, "Alice in Wonderland"
Johnny Depp, "The Tourist"
Paul Giamatti, "Barney's Version"
Jake Gyllenhaal, "Love and Other Drugs"
Kevin Spacey, "Casino Jack"

Winner: Johnny Depp, "Alice in Wonderland"
Possible Upset: Paul Giamatti, "Barney's Version"

Depp does a role he does best plus the movie's massive box office success is a plus factor. Giamatti on the other has the better reviewed performance

Best Actress - Musical or Comedy
Annette Bening, "The Kids Are Alright"
Anne Hathaway, "Love and Other Drugs"
Angelina Jolie, "The Tourist"
Emma Stone, "Easy A"
Julianne Moore, "The Kids Are Alright"

Winner: Annette Bening, "The Kids Are Alright"
Possible Upset: Emma Stone, "Easy A"

Bening is actually seen by the media as the Portman's closest competitor for the Oscar and has received a good share of critic recognition too. The only way I could see her losing is if she split votes with her co-star Moore paving way to a surprise win for Stone's breakthrough performance

Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams, "The Fighter"
Helena Bonham Carter, "The King's Speech"
Mila Kunis, "Black Swan"
Melissa Leo, "The Fighter"
Jacki Weaver, "Animal Kingdom"

Winner: Amy Adams, "The Fighter"
Close Second: Melissa Leo, "The Fighter" / Helena Bonham Carter, "The King's Speech

This is widely seen as an open race and just giving Adams the edge because the Globes love to award hot young actresses like Adams who also has an impressive filmography already.

Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale, "The Fighter"
Michael Douglas, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"
Andrew Garfield, "The Social Network"
Jeremy Renner, "The Town"
Geoffrey Rush, "The King's Speech"

Winner: Michael Douglas, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"
Very Close Second: Christian Bale, "The Fighter"
Possible Upset: Andrew Garfield, "The Social Network"

This is my wild guess! Bale has won a lot of critics organization awards already but I think Douglas has a great chance of winning because the Globes love to have special moment on the awards night and with Douglas' recent successful battle with cancer him winning this could make for good awards moment. Garfield is the new Spiderman, his rising star status coupled with a well reviewed film might give a chance to win. But yeah this Bales has the momentum and this is his award to lose

Best Director
Darren Aronofsky, "Black Swan"
David Fincher, "The Social Network"
Tom Hooper, "The King's Speech"
Christopher Nolan, "Inception"
David O. Russell, "The Fighter"

Winner: Christopher Nolan, "Inception
Very Close Second: David Fincher, "The Social Network"

Another wildcard pick from me! "The Social Network" is the likely Best Picture-Drama winner so Fincher has the best shot to win but Nolan's direction to Inception is just amazing and since Inception is a long shot to win Best Picture this could the way to reward the film's cultural impact. And yes I'm rooting for Nolan!

Best Screenplay
Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy, "127 Hours"
Lisa Cholodenko, "The Kids are Alright"
Christopher Nolan, "Inception"
David Sieber, "The King's Speech"
Aaron Sorkin, "The Social Network"

Winner: Aaron Sorkin, "The Social Network"
Possible Upset: David Sieber, "The King's Speech"

This is Sorkin's award to lose and I hope he really wins this one because back when I watched the film last October I raved here in this blog how I was impressed with the film's script! By the way, you could read the full script at Deadline.com (this is authorized by Sorkin by the way so this legal hehe!)

Best Animated Feature
"Despicable Me"
"How to Train Your Dragon"
"The Illusionist"
"Tangled"
"Toy Story 3"

Winner: "Toy Story 3"
Close Second: "How to Train Your Dragon"
Possible Upset: "The Illusionist"

Pixar has won this award since its inception so it's safe to say Toy Story 3 has this on lock.

Best Foreign Language Film
"Biutiful"
"The Concert"
"The Edge"
"I Am Love"
"In a Better World"

Winner: "Biutiful"
Close Second: "I Am Love"
Possible Upset: "The Concert"

Just guessing :)

Best Original Song
"Bound to You," "Burlesque"
"Coming Home," "Country Song"
"I See the Light," "Tangled"
"There's a Place For Us," "Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader"
"You Haven't Seen the Last of Me," "Burlesque"

Winner: "Coming Home" from "Country Song"
Close Second: "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" from "Burlesque" / "I See the Light" from "Tangled"

I think all three songs all have chances to win but Coming Home which was sung by Gwyneth Paltrow is the type of song that usually wins here.

Best Original Score
Alexandre Desplat, "The King's Speech"
Danny Elfman, "Alice in Wonderland"
AR Rahman, "127 Hours"
Hans Zimmer, ""Inception"
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, "The Social Network"

Winner: Hans Zimmer, ""Inception"
Close Second: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, "The Social Network"
Possible Upset: Alexandre Desplat, "The King's Speech"

Inception's technical aspects are just flawless! I would be completely shocked if they lose this category.
