Nielsen-Soundscan's Top 20 Digital Songs / Top 10 Albums for 2010

With 2010 sales tracking finally over, Nielsen Soundscan released a slew of yearend lists and data. The difference between the Billboard Yearend charts and the Nielsen Soundscan is that Billboard's chart year is from December of the outgoing year to November of the incoming year while Nielsen Soundscan's yearend list covers the whole calendar year.

"California Gurls" by Katy Perry (feat Snoop Dog) won the very close battle with Train's "Hey Soul Sister" for 2010's best selling digital single in the US. "California Gurls" won by 84K over "Hey, Soul Sister" although overall "Hey, Soul Sister" still sold a lot more (it crossed the 5 million mark this week) because it sold ~600k in 2009. Eminem has two song in the yearend top 10 with "Love The Way You Lie" (featuring Rihanna) at #3 and "Not Afraid" at #7. Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" is best selling single from a solo male act at #4 while Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" is the best selling song from a female act. I stressed as "solo" because even though Katy Perry and Eminem's hits sold more, the songs were collaborations.

As expected, Eminem's "Recovery" is the best selling album in the US as the album sold 3.4 million copies in 2010. This is the second time Eminem had the best selling of the year in the US as his third album "The Eminem Show" was #1 in 2002. Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" came in second selling 3.08 million and followed closely by Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" at #3 which sold 2.96 million in just over 10 weeks. Albums sales fell 12.8% to 326.2 million units from 373.9 million in 2009. The hottest tween/teen act of the year, Justin Bieber is at #4 with My World 2.0 selling 2.3 million this year followed by Susan Boyle's holiday album "The Gift" at #5 which sold 1.8 million. Lady Gaga's "The Fame" is at #6 selling 1.59 million for 2010, although the album was released in late 2008 and saw it sales peak in 2009 (it was the #4 album of that year) it still managed to sell well in 2010 due to the deluxe edition which include the EP "Fame Monster" that had the monster hits "Bad Romance" and "Telephone".
