My Top 20 Favorite Movies of 2014

Compared to previous years, I was not able to watch a lot of movies this year and unfortunately I was not able to catch this year's Cinemalaya, Cinema One Originals and even MMFF so I don't have a lot of local films for my list this year. Also, there are some 2013 movies listed because they were shown here this year and I only included movies that I saw in the theater. For reference here are my lists in 2013, 2012 and 2011. And now here's my top 20 favorite movies of 2014 :)

20. Muppets Most Wanted
While the movie is not as emotionally satisfying as 2011's  The Muppets, this sequel is still an enjoyable flick mostly because of Bret Mckenzie's songs where he experimented in variety of genres to great results.

19. Guardians of the Galaxy
I'm not a comic book reader so I was not aware of this series so I was pleasantly surprised how entertaining this movie is. The soundtrack also added to my enjoyment of watching this ("Hooked on a Feeling" was my LSS for weeks!)

18. X Men: Days of Future Past
It was a treat to see the characters and actors of the two eras of X-Men movies together. And the way the movie ended  effectively erases the perceived mistakes of the earlier movies to offer a clean slate for its next installment in 2016.

17. The Trial
While Star Cinema's attempt to do a legal drama is not flawless, the film is still worth the trip to the theater as it tells a very compelling story of how our quest for approval and perfection can ruin our lives.

16. Interstellar
While it's not as entertaining and flashy as Inception, Christopher Nolan's space saga still stood out with its mind-bending twists and amazing visuals.

15. The LEGO Movie
I didn't expect the twist in the third act so I was quite pleased that this movie isn't just an excuse to sell toys as it had something worthy to say about letting your mind explore and not just go beyond what is instructed.

14. Big Hero 6
Its pure family entertainment that not only kids will enjoy. While there's nothing groundbreaking with the story, it's not a big downside as Big Hero 6’s effervescent charm will win your heart.

13. Beauty in a Bottle
A smart  satire on the Filipino standard of female beauty. Watch out for Angelica Panganiban's part as it was  the funniest and sharpest segment.

12. Gone Girl
David Fincher's adaptation of the bestselling novel is a captivating look  on the nature of sensationalized media and how a deteriorating marriage can bring out the worst of anyone.

11. 12 Years a Slave
This year's Oscar winner was shown in local theaters right after it won the award.12 Years a Slave is definitely not an easy film to watch as it deals with one of the darkest moments in history in such a raw and powerful manner. It might not deliver the cathartic experience most movies bring but it is a film which won't likely be forgotten in years to come.

10. Starting Over Again
Starting Over Again totally understands the complications of relationships. It's a heightened reality for sure but it's the type of movie where a lot of people will be able to relate to as it knows that one way or another we have experienced or witnessed the lessons and experiences showcased in this movie

9. Her
Another 2013 film that was shown locally this year. The current champ of the Best Original Screenplay Oscar tells the story of man who is dealing with loneliness after his marriage broke down. The concept of falling in love with a "voice" might sound silly but this film absolutely made it work and you will find yourself empathizing with the film's impossible  romance.

8. Snowpiercer
Just as I thought I've already seen enough dystopian movies, Snowpiercer comes in to deliver a fresh attack of the class wars. Even if the film is mostly confined inside a train, the film still delivers with its riveting action and emotional punch in the end

7. The Book of Life
Backed up by its dazzling design and supported by its wonderful fusion of stories, The Book of Life is one of the most pleasant surprises I've seen in the theater this year. The movie tells a charming tale that fuses cultural myth and heartwarming personal saga so effectively that only a a heart made of stone will not fall for its charms.

6.  Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan
This is the longest film I've seen inside the theater (4 hours) so this definitely is one of my unforgettable movie theater experience of all time. While I admit that there are certain parts of the film that I was uncomfortable with, the film's depiction of crime and justice in the Philippines will provoke your mind after you finished watching it.

5. Whiplash
I think they were just five people who I saw this movie with in the theater so the intensity of this film is felt even more.  I know nothing about jazz and yet this film's music captivated me. This is the type of film that will command your attention no matter what

4. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is not just a showcase of visual effects spectacle but it uses advanced technology in telling one of the most haunting and harrowing story why a war inevitably happens despite the best intentions of both camps to maintain peace.

3. Begin Again
My favorite song of 2014 came from this movie. Apart from its amazing soundtrack, Begin Again also explores how people can drift apart and while there are a few who can successfully reconnect again, it's not always the case and there are just instances where simply moving forward is what is needed to grow.

2. How To Train Your Dragon 2
How To Train Your Dragon 2 is simply a perfect example that an animated film catering to children can go beyond simple kiddie pleasures just as long as you have a focused story that's not afraid to break the status quo.

1. Boyhood
This film does not have a straight story so to speak as it just follows the life of boy over the course of 12 years and in real time at that.  But what fascinated me about this movie is how it was able to capture growing up not just in the physical sense but the emotional and, yes, spiritual journey one has to go through as one matures. One of the most remarkable line of the movie is "I thought there would be more" which was uttered by the mother after she realized that after successful sending her kids to college, she does not know if there is still waiting for her or will she just pass time until she reaches the final milestone of  one's life - death. The film will make you think about your life and how the past can shape up your present and most importantly the future.

My 10 Favorite Sitcom Episodes of 2014

Just like in 2013 and 2012, I will list down my 10 favorite episodes of 10 different US sitcoms that I watched this year. I'm very easy to please and I don't really care if the humor is a cliche or slapstick as long as it is executed so well that it makes me laugh or even smile. Major plus points if you can deliver emotional, warm and fuzzy moments as well ;)

10.  Black-ish "Black Santa/White Christmas" (Season 1 Episode 10)

"Black people can't be racist!"

One of my favorite new shows this season is ABC's Black-ish because it balances family comedy with sharp but not offensive view of the African American culture in modern day America. This episode in particular was about Dre's quest to become the first black "Santa Claus" in their office Christmas celebration but he fails when his boss chose a Latina instead! I like how the episode poked fun of having the "ultimate race card". Other fun moments in this episode was Rainbow auto tuning the kids' voices for the Christmas song production number at Dre's Christmas party. Tracee Ellis Ross surprised me with how she can pull off the crazy comedic stuff her character does.

9. The Big Bang Theory "The Champagne Reflection" (Season 9 Episode 10)

My favorite part of this episode was the "highlights" of Sheldon's  web show "Fun with Flags" where he and Amy did a lot of goofy features for the show. I also like the main story with Leonard, Raj and Wolowitz where they were cleaning the office of a deceased old colleague and they discovered an old champagne bottle with a note that says that it is a gift whenever the scientist finally succeeds with his research but the scientist was not able to open it until his death because he failed with his research. It  lived up to the title as a simple champagne was able to make the characters (and viewers) reflect how not to spend your life focused on just one thing because before you notice it life has passed you by.

8. Brooklyn Nine-Nine  "The Jimmy Jab Games" (Season 2 Episode 3)

One thing I love about this show is how they can managed to pack a story that has material that can cover an entire hour-long episod in a 22-minute episode and yet it does not feel like the episode is half-baked. The titular game is as ridiculous as it sounds as it features a series of nonsensical but fun competitions. This episode showed how strong the ensemble is and the reason why this show is not suffering from the so-called sophomore slump.

7.  The Mindy Project  "Danny and Mindy" (Season 2 Episode 22)

The Mindy Project is a show that annoys me from time to time but yet I can't stop watching it because the show can churn out gems such as the second season finale. While the show struggles to make strong subplots for its constantly changing supporting cast, they did a good job resolving the will-they-won't-they romantic tension between Danny and Mindy.. As a sucker for romcom movies, I absolutely love the romcom beats this episode had! So far this third season, the show has not ruined the Danny and Mindy pairing yet so all the effort made in this episode was not wasted.

6.  Mike & Molly "Mind Over Molly"  (Season 4 Episode 12)

This episode was the one Melissa McCarthy submitted at the Emmy Awards and if not for the strong work of Julia Louis Dreyfus on Veep, I bet she would have taken her second Emmy this year because  she delivered a knockout performance in this episode. Just on the opening scene alone where Molly was blabbering to the psychologist the reason why she's there was just pure comedic perfection. It also had a nice emotional payoff in the end when Molly finally opened up to Mike about her dad.

5. Parks and Recreation "Moving On" (Season 6 Episode 21/22)

The 6th season finale of Parks and Recreation felt like it was designed to be a series finale in case NBC cancels the show (the show was renewed for a 13-episode 7th and final season to premiere next year) and I would not complain if it indeed was the series finale. The episode featured a lot of callbacks (Lil Sebastian, Duke Silver, Cones of Dunshire) and major plot developments like Leslie finally deciding to move forward with her career. Then there was the [spoiler alert] clever time jump in the end which perfectly sets up the final season of the show.

4. Mom "Free Therapy and a Dead Lady's Yard Sale" (Season 2 Episode 8)

My favorite new comedy last season continues to deliver a great mix of comedy and heartbreaking character drama on its second season. This episode was the last one they had this year and boy it was so good. When Violet goes to therapy to deal with her issues after giving her baby up for adoption, it unexpectedly opens up the truth about her dad. That counseling scene was so well executed  as it starts to be goofy then bam  it hits a dramatic plot point. I'm impressed how the show can handle its more dramatic elements without losing the humor unlike the other so-called comedies with dark elements.

3. The Middle "The Sinkhole" (Season 6 Episode 6)

Sue learns to dance Tinikling for her P.E class! Yes that subplot alone was just enough to make this one of my favorite sitcom episodes of the year!  Of course there's the added bias because it was delightful to see a Filipino folk dance featured on one of my favorite shows but still the show was able to use the difficulties of dancing Tinikiling for its full comedic potential.  But apart from that subplot, the episode also features one fantastic scene where the kids discovered Mike's wallet that contains the "death napkin" which contains their will. It was one long take where the Hecks exchanged their frustrations, complaints, jokes and barbs toward each other. It was the scene the shows how strong the ensemble of this show is.

2.  Modern Family "Las Vegas"  (Season 5 Episode 18)

I know that Modern Family is way past its peak and the complaints why it constantly wins awards is quite justified (but let's face it, its closest competitors are more uhmmm.... dramatic) but the show can still deliver knockout episodes and this Emmy award winning episode for Best Directing was an example of this. Modern Family humor is usually rooted to misunderstandings and this episode maximized that to an amazing third act of excellent farce. Honestly, when I first watched this episode I found the beginning a little dull then the second and third acts happened and I was laughing my ass off each time the door opens in those three hotel rooms.

1. How I Met Your Mother "How Your Mother Met Me"  (Season 9, Episode 16)

The best episode of the final season of How I Met Your Mother where we finally find out about The Mother who before this episode was just a mystery that the viewers obsessively tried to figure out all throughout the show's run. At first I thought that it's best for the show not to reveal who the mother is because how can they live up to the hype they've been building up for years? But in this episode they were so successful in integrating the mother to the key events of the show and make us care about her even if this is the first and only season where we get to know her. I guess they were too successful in making us fall in love with The Mother that the series finale upset a lot of its fans (including yours truly although I was not as mad as the rest of the Internet) because of the unsatisfying conclusion to the mother's journey.  Best scene was hands down the part where The Mother is singing La Vien En Rose while playing the ukelele with Ted next door listening to it. That scene was pure magic and it was my favorite Ted-Mother moment until their actual meeting in the series finale which was so fantastic and worth all the years of anticipation. You know if the series ended on that scene, the show would have gone out on a high note and people will give them a pass for a largely disappointing final season but well what's done is done. Despite it all, I do miss HIMYM a lot and I was disappointed when CBS didn't pick up How I Met Your Dad to series because even if the creators have flaws they know how to make a romcom slash friends comedy on half hour TV work so well.

RIP Kuya Ronald

Last Thursday we received Christmas Bonus and well we were happy of course but sadly there was sad news because our longtime utility personnel Kuya Ronald passed away the night before due to cardiac arrest. He was 45. It was so sudden as he was still in the office just two days ago with no signs of health issues. We were not close but still he was nice to me and helped me when I asked for assistance. And for the 5 years that I've been with the company, he was one of the "constant' so I can't help but feel a void now that I won't be able to see him in the office anymore. I feel sad because he won't be able to see his only son graduate from college. He would always boast of his child's achievements and he really worked very hard to send him to college. The fact that he died days before Christmas makes this even more sad. Rest in Peace Kuya Ronald. I will pray for your soul

My Internet connection at home sucks. I can’t live on prepaid Internet stick for good. I need better one but I’m afraid to get a postpaid DSL or Broadband thing because the service might suck again and I have to make calls to the CSR and get template replies that does not help at all. I had enough of those already. What’s annoying is that the process of getting customer service for crappy Internet connection just sucks more so getting bill rebates for sucky connection.  All the ISPs available here in our town have all negative feedbacks when it comes to customer service. But I guess I have to find out which is the most tolerable one, gonna be a tough one.

I admit I’m having an off holiday season so far. I just console myself that at least this is not as terrible as it was two years ago. It’s so hard to be a shock absorber. I try my best to stay positive and be encouraging but damn their negativity can really get me at times. What’s worst the feeling of negativity lingers.  Just 1 3 days to go before Christmas I need to get my groove back on.

I don’t like looking myself at the mirror. I used to be okay with my weight but I’m now obese and I’m so embarrassed to say that I ripped a lot of my pants lately trying to squeeze my fat self. I need to lose weight but it’s hard. Food is my comfort especially how tough it has been for the past year. Not an excuse I know. I tried to eat little and deprive myself of some goodies but I failed because I crave easily. I have no aspirations to have abs or what but I really need to lose pounds soon.

One thing about my physical self that I’ll finally admit that's making me sad is my receding hairline. Only 27 and I’m already balding. It’s hereditary but my older brother was unfortunate to suffer through it as early as 18. My hair started thinning last year. I didn’t notice at first because I barely look myself in the mirror. I tried using one of those shampoos that say it can make your hair thick again but alas nothing happened and it’s expensive so I stopped using it anymore. I just resigned myself that hey this is it for my hair unless I get filthy rich soon so I can get Svenson’s treatments haha. So with a 40 waistline and receding hairline, I look older now than my real age. I used to not care about physical appearances and such but it’s different now.

Go Away Hagupit

Typhoon Hagupit (Ruby once it enters Philippines) is expected to make a landfall and reports say it could be potentially as hard as last year's devastating Haiyan/Yolanda. Our area will not be affected as it will hit Visayas BUT STILL Yolanda was so terrible that I was really hoping no such typhoon will happen again this year.  I'm really hoping and praying Hagupit will not lived up to its name.

12K

Well second consecutive day of posting here on my blog. Will this be a trend? Will I be able to get this blog active again? We shall see. Anyway, last night I was confronted with yet another problem which is not exactly my fault but because I care too much, I'm affected. I've been a little traumatized with poor decision making skills that I've witnessed for the last 2 years. I'm burned out to be honest. I never thought I will have this kind of problem because I'm disciplined when it comes finances but because of certain decisions of other people I need to step up and handle stuff I never thought I will deal with. But I guess that's part of growing up.  Still I'm glad I was able to get my act together and try to calm things down. I had a feeling I was being lied to earlier but I didn't point it out anymore because I know s/he was just trying to save face. I just said the best advice I could give. I see no point on whining about things anymore or join the blame game because well it will not accomplish anything. I just hope and pray s/he listened because I did my best to send the message across with no drama.

On other things, the next 2-3 weeks will be hectic at work as we will need to handle one rushed project that needs to be done before Christmas week. It's nerve-wracking but I'm preparing myself now because this is an important project.

I bet on Lotto earlier. Lucky pick. Yes I went there. I'm that guy now. Trying my luck. The results are now out but I'll just check it tomorrow. Suspense, Yeah as if I'll win anything but who knows right?Even consolation prize will still be helpful with what I'm dealing right now.

Awards season started. Frontrunner Boyhood opens locally tomorrow. Yes I know there's a leaked copy floating online already but well aside from the fact that I have a sucky Internet connection at home, I have this thing that I'll wait til a movie is shown here (especially for the ones I'm interested it with) before resorting to that. I still believe the best way to watch a movie is on a theater. I'm more focused and Boyhood I feel is a movie that's deserving to be seen on  the big screen. It will be in limited theaters though so I hope I can find one convenient to me

Well I guess that's it.  Hope to blog again tomorrow.

One Year Later....

Hello there old friend!

Yes it's been a year since I last updated this blog. There's a lot of reasons why I stopped blogging but mostly because Internet at home sucked big time and I was too lazy to update it. Anyway, I haven't followed the charts closely this year but updates are still active at the Philippine Music Charts Facebook which is constanly updated by Chester who continued the chart listings there from Pinoyexchange to the FB which has a loyal following now. But well good news if anybody is still reading is that I will post and collect the year-end charts for 2014 here just like in the past. I will my other year-end lists as well. And I'm thinking reviving this blog for 2015 as well since well next year this blog will turn 10 years old so I don't want that just pass by. I hope I'll be able to maintain that promise :D

Anyway, so was my life for the past year? I've been busy at work. Got promoted (by default because someone resigned). I'm overseeing programming and scheduling on TeleNovela Channel. Sounds fancy eh? Not exactly since the channel is still finding its place on air but I must say we have a loyal audience. It's been 3 years and the channel went through a lot of challenges and we're still here. I hope good things will happen to the channel soon. I love TV and I'm glad I'm able to work on this industry despite the daunting tasks. I've learned a lot.

As for my side gig, I continue to be movie reviewer and community associate at Pinoyexchange.com. I love my PEx family both online and offline. I've been a member of this forum for 10 years already and I'm so happy that I'm part of the moderating/admin team for the last 3 years. It's a bonus that I earn income from helping out with the site. Social media has affected forum activity in the last few years but the message board is still alive and kicking as the site continues to evolve. I feel privileged to be part of it.

As for my family, well I love my nephew a lot. He turned 6 year this year and I can honestly say that he is one of the reasons why despite the challenges we face this year, we're still solid it's because of this little guy. Yes, it has been a challenging year for us in the family, Our five year-old canteen business folded this year and it was a major blow to us, especially financially speaking. Two of my siblings devoted their time there for the last few years and now they have to go back from the start and be an employee. I assisted my sister to find job again and it was not easy especially because she's in her mid 30s already. I won't deny that there are times I feel so frustrated with what happened especially on the financial losses we dealt with. I helped paying some of the debts and it was so tough but as a family we need to support each other. I try my best not to dwell with that anymore because that's life, you win some, you lose some. But I'm very wary with my finances right now. I have savings and I'm so careful with how I spend my money right now. I'm starting to think about my future right now. I don't think I'll be independent anytime soon. I need to help my family although I'm no breadwinner and my parents have their savings as well, I need to help out with the bills and other needs. I'm glad to say we are nowhere near poverty or what but the financial loss we had was still major so we have to be extra careful. But I choose to think positive right now and I'm claiming it, 2015 will be a better year!

What more do I have to say? Ah romance.... well sadly there's nothing new happening in my life on that area. And because I've been so engrossed with work and family, I have no time to think about it that much. But I will not deny that thoughts of me ending up alone in later life scares me. I do want to have my own family. It does not help when I see my friends (especially my childhood friends) get married and start a family. I turned 27 this year, it's still young but you see the time is still ticking. But I know I'm not ready financially and emotionally. I know in my heart I will be a good father and husband but I know marriage and raising a family ain't easy especially at these times. Through helping taking care of my nephew for the last few years I had a taste of parenthood and while it's so rewarding and heartwarming, it's so tough. I just think of the cost of sending a kid to school and it scares me if I can afford it. I have friends who have to work abroad to give their children a better life. I'm still helping out things at home so this is not the time yet for me to have one of my own. I get scared at time what if it's too late? Of course finding the right woman is not easy as well. I gotta be honest, I also have the one "that got away". We're still friends and I still think what if I made the move back then. But then I realized with the things I've gone through we could have broken up eventually because I won't be able to devote enough time to nurture a good relationship. I think she's with someone now based on her social media posts (oh yes I checked her FB profile every now and then, how stalker-ish of me) but I never asked to confirm. Maybe I'm afraid to hear the answer. I just let things be. But one thing is for sure if she invites me to her wedding, i will not attend. I'm not a masochist.

Woah, I've written a lot. Sorry if I have typos or grammar issues. Too lazy to edit haha. Anyway, nice to see you again my dear old Forg Files. Sorry for neglecting you for the last 11 months. I'm back and hopefully I'll be as active as before.
